I like to shake things up a lot. These days I dedicate most of my time to Civic Ventures, a nonprofit think tank leading the call for encore careers, work with social impact in the second half of life. I’m also on the advisory boards of The Op-Ed Project, an initiative expanding the range of voices we hear from in the world, and SheWrites.com, an online community for women writers.
Before joining Civic Ventures, I spent a decade as an independent journalist/author/educator/speaker focused on the new landscape of work. My book, “One Person/Multiple Careers” popularized the term “slasher” for those who can’t answer the question “What do you do?” with a single word or phrase.

I created the Shifting Careers blog and column for The New York Times and the blog, Working the New Economy, for Yahoo! My writing has appeared in Travel and Leisure, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Time Out New York, Legal Affairs, More Magazine, and scores of other publications. I have also taught freelance journalism and worked as a private coach to other writers. Before working as a journalist, I practiced law for nearly ten years.
I’ve been cited as an authority on careers and workplace trends in countless media outlets including The Today Show, CNBC, MSNBC, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Boston Globe, and National Public Radio.
In my free time, I read, write, travel, and play low-stakes poker.
